Working Girl: Your 9-5 Style Guide

By ocean magazine — August 08, 2012

The end of summer is near and your closet is filled up with flirty sundresses, tank tops and other warm-weather looks. Unfortunately, your days are still spent in conference rooms with guys in button-downs and slacks. Say goodbye to the power suit for a while with a week’s worth of office-friendly summer ensembles.

MONDAY
A sundress is the most versatile summertime purchase you can make. By selecting one in a muted pastel, you can show off your beachy glow on the weekends and, with just a few minor adjustments, be office-appropriate during the week. Finola Hughes, the host of How Do I Look? on Style Network, says go glam by pairing a summery sundress with a shrunken jacket or vintage beaded cardigan for a dressier look.

TUESDAY
Somewhere between capri and Bermuda lies a short-pant length that, when paired with wedge heels and a short-sleeved jacket, becomes the summer version of the suit. Choose tweedy browns and grays to increase the professional punch of the look. Bare legs are the way to go in the summer—as long as they are buffed and smoothed.

WEDNESDAY
Get over the hump by combining the darling tube top you bought for weekends with a pair of slim pants and a crisp white blazer. Add a pair of wedges to take it from beach to boardroom.

THURSDAY
Keeping the office-outfit palette in neutral (cream linen skirt, layered ultrabright white Ts), pack on the punch with accessories in summer’s brights. Several bright bangles or a statement necklace will pull the look together. For footwear, we know the urge to wear your favorite flip-flops to the office is very strong, but curb it. Instead, opt for flat sandals embellished with beads, shells or jewels.

FRIDAY
By Friday, your anxiousness for the weekend is starting to show. Achieve casual elegance with dark skinny jeans and a sleeveless blouse. The crisp white blazer from Wednesday will instantly upgrade the look when you need face time with the boss.
